12 (13) Things to Help with Breathing with Smoke and Heat

We are dealing with A LOT in the Bay Area right now.  Just a little list of things we can all do to take care of ourselves and our loved ones…and a #13 for pets.

  1. Drink a lot of water.
  2. Limit or eliminate caffeine, sugar, spicy foods.
  3. Eat cooling veggies – romaine, cucumber, etc.
  4. Eat cooling fruits – watermelon and limes in water, etc.
  5. Stay indoors, shades on windows and block holes with towels and tape (for smoke and to keep cool air inside).
  6. Drink a lot of water (important enough to list twice).
  7. Don’t shower during daytime or cook in oven or boil a lot as all trap heat in house, cook at night and keep in fridge.
  8. Wear a mask that eliminates particles or double mask if outdoors and cover eyes too.
  9. Breathe as much through your nose as possible.
  10. Limit restrictive clothing, especially on chest to be able to breathe better.
  11. If smoke is indoors too, limit use of fans with smoke, try a hepa filter and cold packs on body.
  12. Rest, meditate, take it easy until it’s over…you will make it through this, do not exert yourself unless an emergency, take care of YOU right now and then you can take care of others. (Think of the plane situation…put on your mask first so you have oxygen so you can help others.)

13. For our loved animals, watch their breathing too and use cool wet cloths to wipe them down, ensure their noses aren’t full of ash and their eyes are clean.  Ensure they are drinking water and keep them close, they need you too right now.  For those in evacuation areas who see animals, please remember to take pics and post them so people can find their loved ones.

***Cooling trick, using an all cotton cloth/t-shirt, dip in cold water and wipe on skin and let air dry.  Do continuously for a couple of minutes and you will feel yourself cool down.

Wishing you a healthy weekend and hoping you and your loved ones keep safe in the heat, fires and smoke.
