I’m reposting per a request as this was on my older site.

As someone who has treated those sensitive to chemicals for 20+ years, I’m consistently amazed that we allow products to say things like ‘fragrance’ in the ingredients descriptions.  Myself and my assistant have called endless companies over the years directly for clients attempting to get a list of ingredients only to be told ‘there is nothing toxic’ in the fragrance.

Finally, Unilever decided to do something different with it’s smart label and it’s going to be a huge education for many just how many chemicals make up that one word ‘fragrance’.

Example, go to Suave, Professionals, Keratin Infusion Smoothing Conditioner in their smart label database.

Then click on ‘Fragrance’ and you will find the following chemicals make up the fragrance for ONE product.

Dimethyl Phenethyl Butyrate
Hexyl Cinnamal
Phenoxyethyl Isobutyrate
Ethylene Brassylate
Pentadecalactone
Citronellol
Linalyl Acetate
Benzyl Salicylate
Benzyl Acetate
2,6-Dimethyl-7-Octen-2-Ol
Cedrol Methyl Ether
Methyldihydrojasmonate
Dipropylene Glycol
Pentamethylcyclopent-3-ene-Butanol
Hexahydro-Methanoindenyl Propionate
Linalool
(E)-.Beta.-Ionone
Butylphenyl Methylpropional
2-t-Butylcyclohexyl Acetate

Surprising? Yes, because for years companies have been able to basically do whatever they want with that word and throw in so many chemicals you would likely not choose if you knew.

Here is hoping Unilever’s decision starts a wave of transparency with companies around the world.  We deserve to know what is in the products we take so we can make conscious choices.
